Rie Muñoz (1921-2015), a renowned Alaskan artist, made a pivotal career and life decision in 1951 when she randomly chose Alaska for a vacation destination. Falling in love with Juneau, she secured a job and a place to live within a day, making Alaska her home ever since. Muñoz, with a diverse range of occupations including journalist, teacher, museum curator, and artist, studied art at Washington and Lee University and the University of Alaska-Juneau. In 1999, she received an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities Degree from the University of Alaska. Since 1972, Muñoz dedicated herself full-time to her art, with her paintings and prints exhibited in galleries across the U.S. and Canada.
